The Afternoon Tea is a cultural retreat with a twist: warm mugs, warmer company, and conversation brewed to lift the spirits. It is part social ritual, part literary therapy, and entirely about community because we know very well that, sometimes, juggling midterms, essays, lectures, and deadlines can feel overwhelming. The cure, however, is simple and we’re offering it: tea, good company, insightful discussions and, most importantly, reminders that we’re not reading alone.
Therefore, The Afternoon Tea welcomes everyone with an interest in the Faculty of Letters to its monthly gatherings held in October, November, December, and January:
- Prospective students, curious to taste the atmosphere before they join us
- Our first-year students, still finding their footing (and daylight)
- Second-year students, living their best literary lives
- Third-year students, bravely struggling with their BA paper, one mug of tea at the time
- Our MA students, mastering theory, research practice, and the art of staying awake
- Our doctoral students, whom we cherish deeply and shamelessly exploit
- Our faculty members, who know that tea and literature are a lifelong pairing and promise to leave their red pens at the office (mostly)
The venue is always the same: the cosiest place in the building, namely the Romanian-Hungarian Library Reading Room. The time is, naturally, five o’clock. For the date and theme, follow us on Facebook, Instagram, the Faculty’s and the Department’s webpage, or simply look for Paul’s excellent posters, artfully scattered around the building so they can’t be missed.
We provide the tea (and sometimes biscuits, maybe even milk), but we warmly invite you to bring your own mug. We do provide paper cups, but tea tastes better from a proper cup, and it helps reduce waste (and improve style). If you bring your own mug, it should be your favourite (it is amazing how much a mug can tell about its owner and we’d love to know you better).
The Afternoon Tea is brewed and brought to you by a small but determined team of literature lovers, language aficionados, and serial event-planners who believe in the restorative powers of reading, conversation, and, of course, tea:
- Petronia Popa-Petrar
- Amelia Precup
- Mihaela Buzec
- Paul Paraschiv
